TAHA PROGRAMS

TAHA is primarily funded by national and international donor agencies to create an organizational focal point that provides leadership to unite Tanzanian horticulture industry as a community of viable stakeholders who, together as an influential body, are competitively positioning Tanzanian production, processing, and marketing in the global horticulture and floriculture export markets.

As an association of members, TAHA programs address across sector issues to align governing agencies, policy makers, investment bankers, farmers, exporters, airlines and airfreight industry members together in a common effort: to increase global market competition by pursing a political and business environment that is dedicated to elevating the potential of the horticulture and floriculture sector in Tanzania.

To assure organization sustainability TAHA leadership and committees work actively with national and international consultants to:

  1. Improve market Links for small holder farmers to access the local and international market
  2. Create viable solutions to establish airfreight cargo from Kilimanjaro Airport and support the national outreach and membership of TAHA
  3. Enhance a sustainable management of natural resources and conservation of biodiversity in citrus production in the Iringa and Mbeya Regions
  4. Advance policy development in crucial infrastructure areas to improve access to market and by eliciting cooperation to meet international quality standards and phytosanitary practices that will protect and improve the natural environment to increase the quality and yield of product

ADVOCACY & POLICY DEVELOPMENT
ADVOCACY FOR A COMPETITIVE HORTICULTURAL SECTOR IN TANZANIA
BEST-AC is the management agency responsible for developing and delivering the Private Sector Advocacy Fund (PSA Fund). The purpose of BEST-AC and the PSA Fund is to improve the quality and effectiveness of private sector advocacy, thereby having a direct impact on public policy, legislation, regulations and the external environment, insofar as they relate to the Tanzanian private sector. Funding is provided from the Governments of Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. TAHA has commissioned the Development Associate Ltd (DASS) to improve the competitiveness of the horticultural Sector through improving infrastructure mainly roads and airport (KIA).

AGRICULTURE & FOREST CONSERVATION
The Eastern Arc Tree Crop Project
The goal of this USAID project is to create a sustainable management of natural resources and biodiversity conservation in the Southern Region by assisting to develop improved land use and forest management plans and decrease communities and farmers' reliance on forest fuel wood through the establishment of community woodlots. It is designed to link fruit farmers to local and export markets and thereby increase smallholder incomes. It is being implemented by Enterprise Works/VITA’s Program to Advance Tanzanian Economic Growth through Agricultural Intensification and Forest Conservation (T-ECO).

Smallholder Horticulture Outgrower Promotion (SHOP)
The program will employ a variety of horticultural/tree crop and land use/conservation activities to increase incomes and expand livelihoods at the smallholder level, primarily through improvements in agricultural productivity, tree crop cultivation, processing capacity, and market access, especially positioning farmers as out growers and transitioning them to export quality horticulture product. USAID funds this program.

World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD)
The Partnership on Market Access program TAHA receives donor support from the Netherlands to achieve food and agricultural products quality standards. The goal is to increase the global competitiveness of horticulture sector in developing countries to reduce poverty and promote sustainable production.

TAHA is the Secretariat for the following PP projects:

  1. Advocating for a Market Oriented Strategy for pesticide in Tanzania
    This project raises awareness of the safe use of and, cost effective access to pesticides.
  2. 1. Preparation of an industry driven training program for horticulture export
    This is cross sector training project involves a working group members from TAHA, TASTA, ADRDC, MAFSC to assess and seek new donor funding that will qualify horticulture export trainers for industry members.
  3. Promoting Investments through enhancement of Plant Breeders Rights (PBR) Legislation
    This cross sector project involves breeders and working group members from TAHA, TASTA, BRELA and TPRI to promote and create awareness of the PBR Act.
  4. Improvement of the Inspectorate services in Tanzania
    This cross sector project ensures efficient phytosanitary operational procedures and good agriculture export practices. Working group members are TAHA, TASTA, MAFSC.
  5. Investment Promotion of the Tanzanian Horticultural Sector
    This working group, TAHA, MAFSC, TIC and MITM, is developing an integrated marketing strategy to attract foreign & local investors, importers and exporters to become aware of business opportunities available in Tanzania.

EXPORT & MARKETING
The Tanzania Airfreight Project (TAP)
This USAID funded program is designed to create a sustainable, commercially viable airfreight solution. This includes analyzing airfreight capacity and consolidation services, developing a business plan for establishment and financing of a freight consolidation company, coordinating and negotiating cargo space purchase with TAHA members and other exporters and related association capacity-building in areas of membership development, investment promotion, and export market promotion. The TAP project works in conjunction with TAHA and private sector exporters, private handling companies, the of the Kilimanjaro International Airport private management company (KADCO), and critical government agencies (i.e. MAFC, MITM, TIC).
